Log on Automatically to WinXP
The following are different startup options for
automatically logging on to different users automatically.
- Turn ON automatic logon in Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and in Microsoft
Windows XP Professional
- Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" check box, and then click Apply.
In the Automatically Log On window, type the username you want to log on
to automatically and enter the password in the Password box, and then retype
the password in the Confirm Password box. If you dont have a password leave
the password boxes empty.
- Turn OFF automatic logon in Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and in Microsoft
Windows XP Professional
- Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
Put a tick in "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" check box, and then click Apply.
- Use Registry Editor to automatic logon and add your log on information
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Using your account name and password, double-click the DefaultUserName
entry, type your user name, and then click OK.
Double-click the DefaultPassword entry, type your password under the
value data box, and then click OK.
- If there is no DefaultPassword value, create the value. If no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows XP automatically
changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon registry key from 1 (true) to 0
(false) and auto logon will not work. To do this, follow
these steps:
In Registry Editor, click Edit, click New, and then click String
Value
Type DefaultPassword as the value name, and then press ENTER.
Double-click the newly created key, and then type your password in
the Value Data box. If you don't have a password leave it blank.
Double-click the AutoAdminLogon entry, type 1 in the Value Data box, and
then click OK. If there is no AutoAdminLogon entry, create the entry. To do
this, follow these steps:
In Registry Editor, click Edit, click New, and then click String
Value
Type AutoAdminLogon as the value name, and then press ENTER
Double-click the newly created key, and then type 1 in the Value
Data box.
Quit Registry Editor
- Use Registry
Editor to stop automatic logon
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK
Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Double-click the AutoAdminLogon entry, type 0 in the Value Data box, and
then click OK.
Exit the registry
- Turn ON startup
welcome screen with username icons
- Start comp and tap F8 while starting up to start in safe mode
Click Start, then settings, then open control panel
Click on user accounts.
Click on change the way users log on and off and put a tick in both
boxes then hit apply and restart the comp
- Turn OFF startup welcome screen with username icons
- Start comp and tap F8 while starting up to start in safe mode
Click Start, then settings, then open control panel
Click on user accounts.
Click on change the way users log on and off and take the tick out of
both boxes then hit apply and restart the comp
- Bypass the automatic logon temporarily for another user to logon
- If you want to bypass the automatic logon to log on as a
different user, hold down the SHIFT key after you log off or after Windows XP
restarts. Note that this procedure applies only to the first logon. To enforce
this setting for future logoffs, the administrator must set the following
registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
