Mother and daughters lose a total of 15 stone 9lbs !(Article taken from
Weight Watchers website in December 1999 (Millenium
Edition Magazine) Margaret lost 4 stone (56 lbs)!
Quite honestly, I didn't think Weight Watchers would work for me
because I had been fat all my life. My mum was of the generation that always
tried to feed their children up so I was a fat child, a fat teenager and a fat
adult. She used to say I wasn't made to be slim and I thought that was true.
Now I can see it isn't. I'm in my 50s and finally I'm the way I've wanted to be
all my life.
My son, David, lives at home and before Weight Watchers, the food
I was eating was mainly based around what he liked - chips with everything!
After the first Meeting I came home and went through my cupboards and used a
felt pen to write the Points value on every packet. At the beginning, I remember thinking, "Why should I pay £4 a week to attend Meetings?" I thought it would take me ages to get anywhere and I would be paying a fortune. But if someone had said to me at the beginning, "Give me £100 and I will cut off all your fat" I would have jumped at it! I have never felt better. I feel younger and people say I look younger too. June
lost 2½ stone (35 lbs)!
When I joined Weight Watchers I was 11½ stone and nearly 35. I
wanted to lose weight and was ready to do it for me. What I found I needed, was
someone to weigh me, to help me keep on track. I really liked the Programme as
it fitted into my everyday life. I could go for Chinese with my family or take
the kids to McDonalds and that was fine.
I'm a Leader now and something I learned on the Programme that I
always say to my Members, is not to think in terms of your final Goal Weight
but to break it down into Silver 7s - that way you can really see your
progress. I lost around 1½ pounds a week but if ever I gained weight Norma, my
Leader, was great. She would just say, "Don't worry about it. It's just a
temporary setback, just get yourself back on track."
I joined Weight Watchers with my mum and sisters, and having them
to help was great, because if I was ever feeling fed up, I knew I could phone
them. We all really loved the Meetings and always stayed because you learn so
much. Also, it was such a laugh, more like a social occasion. After I reached my Goal Weight, I started my Leader training as soon as I could and now I run three Meetings. I knew I would get a lot out of being a Leader as I knew how good I felt about losing weight and I wanted to help others feel like that. If you've had a weight problem, you'll always have to make an effort to stay slim but the Programme is something you can stick to forever. Some people think that sounds awful but what's so terrible about a Programme that lets you eat pizza and chocolate? The rewards are definitely worth it. Mary
lost 1½ Stone (21 lbs)!
When I was younger I had a weight problem and being at school and
being chubby is terrible. I was a size 14 when I was 13 and well under 5 feet,
so I was tiny, fat, had red hair and was badly teased. I laugh about it now but
it was awful at the time.
Anyway, I lost the weight and was a slim adult until I had my son,
Ronnie, now aged three, then I ate like a horse. Later I became pregnant with
twins and after they were born I was 10 stone 8 pounds. I was terrified of
ending up fat again so when my sister Sandra was telling us all about Weight
Watchers, I thought, "I could do that". I also hadn't been out much
since the twins were born and I thought it would be somewhere nice to go and it
was. It sounds sad, but with three children under three you don't get a minute
to yourself.
What attracted me to Weight Watchers was the fact that basically I
could eat what I liked as long as I Pointed it. That was brilliant for me.
I did really well in the first few weeks and soon all we talked
about was Weight Watchers! We all swapped ideas. I used to be a cook, so I
enjoyed the chance to experiment with food again. I got ideas from cookbooks,
and then improvised. I joined Weight Watchers in September and got to Goal
Weight in December but I keep going to weekly Meetings as I was determined to
stay slim for my wedding in February. I'm now doing a computer course and I hope to make that my new career. It's hard juggling everything but I want to learn new skills and get back to work. Losing weight has given me the confidence to try. This is me starting over again and getting back on track. It's terrific. Jacqueline
lost 4 Stone (56 lbs)!
I was always fairly slim but after my daughter, Amanda, now aged
three, was born, I put on about 4 stone in a year. I just went mad, eating all
the time. When I was big I used to look older and frumpier, but day-to-day it
didn't bother me. But when my sister Sandra, joined Weight Watchers I thought,
"She's not going to be thin while I'm fat!" So I joined with my mum
and my sister Mary.
We joined in September 1998 and I was desperate to be slim for my
30th birthday the following June. I'd seen a programme about obese people and
it said that most people, who are fat at 30, stay fat for the rest of their
lives and I thought. "Not me!" In the end I got to my Goal Weight in
the May and on my birthday we went out for a meal and I wore a slinky new dress
and felt fabulous.
I found the Programme really, really easy. I've got a very sweet
tooth and I never deprived myself once because I saved a few Points for
chocolate every day. People wouldn't even have known I was on a diet because
what I was eating fitted in with the family, so I didn't have to make any
special meals. I could even go for a McDonald's with the children.
I lost every week; usually around 1½ to 2 pounds, and it took me
35 weeks to lose 4 stone. I was very happy with that because I seemed to be
ahead of everyone else in the family and I am quite competitive and wanted to
be the best! Now I clerk for my sister, June, and I think it's good for Members to see other people who have reached their Goal Weight. People come up with all sorts of excuses for not losing weight, but excuses are nonsense. After all, Mum and I have both lost the same amount and she's 25 years older than me, so the Programme works for everyone if you stick to it. Before I joined Weight Watchers I'd resigned myself to being a fat mum, but I know now that if you want to change, you can. Sandra
lost 3 stone 9lb (51 lbs)!
Sandra started the ball rolling when she joined in August 1998 and
the others were so impressed with her success that they joined too. Now June is
a Leader herself and Margaret and Jacqueline clerk at Meetings. Here they tell
us how they made the transformation from fat to fabulous.
"I started a craze in my family in August 1998 when I joined
Weight Watchers! I joined because my friend had and I thought I might as well.
I had been over-weight for years. I'd tried other diets but you know what it's
like - you start full of good intentions but after a few weeks you lose
interest. The other diets were hard because it was eat this on Monday, eat this
on Tuesday and I'm quite a fussy eater so it wasn't me.
Also, I became diabetic about four years ago and just before I
joined Weight Watchers my blood sugars were running really high and the
hospital made it clear that my weight wasn't helping. I knew I had to do
something so I did try to diet, but I could see myself going back to the old
pattern of losing interest so Weight Watchers seemed the answer. I've never
looked back!
I needed a flexible diet because of the diabetes and now the
hospital are really pleased with me and think Weight Watchers is a very healthy
diet. I had to change my eating habits quite a lot because before I was eating far too much of all the wrong things like pies, chips and crisps by the multi-pack. But I found it surprisingly easy to change because I felt it was my decision. It took me a year to get to Goal but that first Christmas was when I started seeing a real difference, and that's when I knew I'd keep it up until I reached Goal. When you're slim you do all sorts of things you won't do when you're fat. This year we're going on holiday to Tenerife and it will be my first time abroad. |
